District President Thomas Schürmann presents a grant notification

For many people in the Lower Rhine region, everyday life does not end at the national border. They work in the Netherlands, study in Belgium or set up a business in a neighbouring country. To ensure that differing regulations and bureaucratic issues do not become an obstacle, the state of Nordrhein-Westfalen is strengthening cross-border advisory services in the region.

District President Thomas Schürmann has presented a grant award of 770,220 euros to the Euregio Rhein-Waal. The award was accepted by Andreas Kochs, Director of the Euregio Rhein-Waal, on behalf of the Euregio’s Chairman, Hubert Bruls.

“Europe is part of everyday life in the Lower Rhine region. Thousands of people cross the border to work, study or visit family and friends. The GrenzInfoPunkte ensure that differing regulations do not create unnecessary hurdles. With our funding, we are enabling people to take advantage of the opportunities offered by our border region safely and easily,” said District President Thomas Schürmann.

The state funding will secure the future of the Euregio Rhein-Waal GrenzInfoPunkt in Kleve and support its further development until the end of 2028. The state of Nordrhein-Westfalen is providing a total of 770,220 euros for this purpose. In 2026, 265,180 euros will be allocated, followed by 252,520 euros in both 2027 and 2028.

The advice centre supports citizens and businesses with enquiries relating to working, living, studying or setting up a business in the neighbouring country. Among other things, it provides information on social security, taxes, health insurance, pension entitlements and employment law regulations. The aim is to provide guidance and break down bureaucratic barriers.

The GrenzInfoPunkte were originally established as part of a Interreg project. An evaluation carried out in 2024 showed that demand for the advisory services had risen significantly in recent years. At the same time, the issues raised have become more complex and the previous funding no longer covered the actual costs involved. The new three-year grant takes this development into account and creates a reliable basis for the centre’s future work.

There are a total of eight GrenzInfoPunkte in the German-Dutch-Belgian border region, four of which are in Nordrhein-Westfalen. Two of these locations are in the Regierungsbezirk Düsseldorf – in Kleve, near the Euregio Rhein-Waal, and in Mönchengladbach, near the Euregio Rhein-Maas-Nord.
