The spring meeting of the Euregio Council took place on 26 June at Fort Pannerden in the Municipality of Lingewaard. During the Euregio Council meeting, Luciën van Riswijk, mayor of Zevenaar, was appointed as a member of the Executive Board of the Euregio Rhine-Waal.

Mr van Riswijk succeeds Agnes Schaap on the Executive Board. She stepped down as mayor of the Municipality of Renkum in May and thus also resigned her duties in the Euregio Rijn-Waal. Luciën van Riswijk has been mayor of Zevenaar since the end of 2018. Before that, he had also got to know the Euregio Rhine-Waal in his role as alderman in the municipality of Rijnwaarden and then as mayor of the municipality of Druten. Mayor Van Riswijk is looking forward to taking his place in the Executive Board of the Euregio Rhine-Waal and the Euregio Rhine-Waal is looking forward to a pleasant cooperation.

Municipal finances

During the meeting, the controllers of Zevenaar and Alpen informed the Euregio councillors about the structure of municipal finances in both countries. Especially on the revenue side, there are major differences between the two systems. On the expenditure side, municipalities in both countries are faced with additional tasks, which are placed on municipalities from the central government, without making the appropriate funding available for them. This poses challenges to both Dutch and German municipalities and leads to cuts in those areas where municipalities do not have statutory duties.

The meeting also adopted the annual accounts for 2024 and informed members about the status of the 80 Years of Freedom grant programme, the Euregio Profile Schools and various other activities such as the 25th anniversary of the consultation hour for border visitors. There was also a review of the successful hydrogen conference organised by the Euregio Rhine-Waal in January at the request of its members.

After the meeting, councillors were able to get to know the fortress during an interesting tour.
