Freedom in motion - successful sports day in Gendringen

A sports day was held in Gendringen at the beginning of June. Around 120 Dutch and German children came together and freedom, play and cooperation took centre stage on this day. The sports day is part of the ‘Freedom in Motion’ project.

Freedom on the Move is an initiative of Stichting Welcom Montferland, in co-operation with the municipalities of Emmerich, Montferland and Oude IJsselstreek. The project brings together children, teachers and cultural partners from the Netherlands and Germany. It is about more than just remembering: freedom is made visible and tangible through encounters and co-operation.

Numerous events have therefore been and are being organised so that valuable, cross-border encounters can take place. For example, students from ROC het Graafschap College have already given guest lessons on Dutch remembrance culture at German primary schools. On 5 May, German children welcomed the Freedom Fire in Emmerich and had breakfast together with German and Dutch runners, while Dutch schoolchildren greeted the fire at various locations. An in-depth peace week will follow in September. The pupils who took part in the sports day will then meet again.

The project is being implemented by Stichting Welcom Montferland, the city of Emmerich am Rhein, Gemeente Oude Ijsselstreek, Gemeente Montferland, Sportbedrijf Doetinchem BV and Stichting Beroepsonderwijs en Volwasseneneducatie Oost- Gelderland. The Euregio Rhine-Waal supports the ‘Freedom in Motion’ project as part of the Small Projects Fund with funding from the EU Germany-Nederland programme.
