GRaiNNOVATE project officially launched

The GRaiNNOVATE project, which is funded by Interreg Deutschland-Nederland and deals with the development of a more efficient measurement of grain quality, officially started at the end of 2024.

The aim of the project is to develop a sustainable and precise method for the rapid assessment of grain quality, with the help of which the process for determining quality can be simplified and takes less time. In this way, the project is counteracting existing problems such as time-consuming quality controls and staff shortages, thereby reducing the waste of resources within the grain-flour chain.

To achieve this goal, the project partners are working together across borders to develop the SMS4Grain device (Smart Multi-sensor System for Grain). This device combines spectroscopic methods, biophotonics and AI to determine quality parameters such as falling number, protein and gluten content as well as moisture within a short period of time. The SMS4Grain device to be developed thus offers the possibility of combining several measurements and delivering the results within a few minutes.

In the GRaiNNOVATE project, various SMEs and knowledge institutions within the border region are working closely together to realise the project objectives. The project is led by the Dutch lead partner Meluna Research B.V. based in Gelderland. Other participating companies on the German side are Aspectus GmbH, Plange GmbH and Rheinland Technologie GmbH - all three based in North Rhine-Westphalia. The Eindhoven University of Technology in Noord-Brabant is also involved in the project as a research institution. The consortium is also supported by nine other associated partners.

The project started at the beginning of November 2024 and will run until the end of April 2027. The project has a total budget of 1,914,453.10 euros within this period. The project partners' own contribution amounts to 826,665.91 euros. The funding amount of the Interreg VI programme amounts to a total of 1,087,787.19 euros and is co-financed by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Industry, Climate Protection and Energy of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia and the provinces of Gelderland and Noord-Brabant.
